Steps to Secure a Position
Interested in a position at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH) as a Registered Nurse, Registered Paediatric Nurse, Registered Midwife, Registered Mental Health Nurse?
Steps you need to take to secure a position in our hospitals:
- Contact the Nurses Board of Western Australia and enquire about registering as a Nurse or Midwife +61 8 9421 1100. You may also wish to contact the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council regarding national standards and processes for the regulation of nursing and midwifery within Australia.
- Once you have obtained registration, contact the KEMH Human Resource Department.
- Please send a covering letter stating your area/s of interest and an updated Curriculum Vitae expanding on general and specialty areas worked in nursing and/or midwifery with a brief summary of duties and responsibilities performed. You are required to state the number of years you have worked in paediatrics, neonates, mental health, midwifery, theatre, oncology or other relevant settings.
- If positions are available, an interview shall be arranged
with a Director of the respective Clinical Care Unit or
Clinical Manager.
- If you are successful in your interview we will then
offer you a position.
- Offer of employment is conditional on you providing
evidence of:
- Registration with, and current practicing certificate from the Nurses Board of Western Australia.
- Satisfactory pre-employment health screening.
- Copy of your birth Certificate, Passport (Visa details), Qualifications, Certificates, Records of Service and private health insurance. PMI is essential for visa holders and their families.

Whether or not you have membership with any or all of these organisations is not a condition of employment at KEMH.
Salaries and Conditions
All registered nurses and midwives employed at KEMH have their salaries and conditions covered by an Award, the "Nurses' (ANF - WA Public Sector) Award 2002" and an Agreement, the "Registered Nurses and Enrolled Mental Health Nurses - ANF - Department of Health Certified Agreement 2005".
The career structure of registered nursing or midwifery in Western Australia is described in the Award in Section 10 - Wages and Allowances. KEMH employs registered nurses and midwives at RN Level 1, RN Level 2 and SRN Level 1 to 10.
For RN Levels 1 and 2, salaries increment for each year of service that exceeds an average of 24 hours per week. An average of less than 24 hours per week will take 2 years to increment salary. SRN levels 1 to 10 do not increment each year.
Direct entry midwives i.e. those without registered nursing qualifications commence employment at the Registered Nurse Level 1 Increment 3.

For the period Jul - Dec 06 midwives and nurses employed at KEMH were paid, on average, an additional 25% of their award salary because of shift allowances and overtime.
Thus a nurse or midwife employed at RN Level 1 Increment 3 working full-time shift work at KEMH since July 2006 could expect to have earned from $46,635 to $58,293 over a year. Conversions to other currencies displayed for your interest are as at 9th June 2009.

Full-time employees at KEMH are rostered an average of 38 to 40 hours per week. Specific rostering will be arranged in collaboration with your area's manager.
For KEMH to determine your pay level you are required to furnish a record of your previous nursing and midwifery experience. If you have no Record of Service Booklet, letters from employers on Hospital Letterhead, should contain the following information:
- position/positions held at the hospital/health organisation
- commencement and ceasing dates
- details of full or part-time hours worked, wards, areas, departments worked in
- staff working casual (bank) shifts, must also supply
commencement/ceasing dates and number of hours
worked during this period
Accommodation
Housing is NOT provided by the hospital. There is however ample accommodation available in surrounding areas to the hospital. Further accommodation information.
