The Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS), which includes King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEMH), follow a best-practice healthcare plan and employ a dedicated Safety, Quality and Performance team to support staff in providing consistently safe, high quality, patient-centred care.
Our health care plan is based on a set of 10 national healthcare standards, set out by the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care and endorsed by the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS). WNHS periodically undergo an accreditation review and are regularly assessed by ACHS to ensure compliance with each standard.
The standards let you know to expect a certain minimum standard of care at any accredited health care facility in Australia.

A dedicated Infection Prevention and Control team help keep you healthy and germ free while in hospital.
We practice hand hygiene and stay up-to-date with new ways to keep you germ-free.

Medications are managed and given by trained and authorised medical professionals.

Our policy and processes ensure you receive the right care.
Check your full name and date of birth on the ID band and tell us if any details are wrong. The staff will also check the medical record number.
Clinical handover is how we make sure all staff are kept up to date with your condition and care plan.
Patient involvement in handover helps us ensure your needs are met.
There are many handovers involving many different staff at different times and locations during your stay. Handover is also done in different ways; in person, over the phone, on paper or electronically, however it’s done, we want you to be involved.
We have systems in place for safe and appropriate use of blood products.
You will be informed about the benefits and risks of using blood products.
Our blood products are transported, received, stored and monitored safely and efficiently.
We will help you avoid pressure injuries by monitoring your condition and informing you about ways to reduce risk.
Management plans are developed and special equipment is available for those who are at risk.
We will partner with you and your family or carer to create a management and prevention plan.
You, your family or carer is encouraged to alert staff if they notice a change in your or your baby’s condition.
Your care will be prioritised if your needs become urgent or your condition worsens.

We have plans and procedures in place to reduce your risk of falling while in hospital.
You and your family or carer will be informed of identified ’falls risks’ and prevention strategies will be included as part of your care plan, if you are ‘at risk’.
KEMH is currently fully accredited. Our next accreditation review is scheduled for October 2014.
