The WA Perinatal Mental Health Unit (WAPMHU) provides training courses and presentations for health professionals and community groups.

Training courses:

Presentations:

  • About WAPMHU (15 – 20 min):
    a brief overview of the unit and its activities. Covers the roles and responsibilities of staff, service expansion projects and state/federal initiatives.
  • Overview of perinatal mental health (15 min):
    discusses the signs and symptoms of the baby blues, postnatal psychosis and postnatal depression.
  • Perinatal anxiety disorders (1 hour):
    discusses the presentation of anxiety disorders in the perinatal period.
  • Overview of perinatal mental health resources (45 min):
    describes the resources available to consumers and health professionals. Includes 30 min DVD presentation (‘Boodjarri Business’, consumer or health professional version).
  • Carnarvon Aboriginal perinatal mental health project (30 min):
    Presents the results of a baseline evaluation conducted in Carnarvon with local health professionals and members of the Aboriginal community. Also discusses the implementation of the project.
  • Practical support project (20 min):
    describes the pilot project, in which the Red Cross provides mothers with practical support in their homes. Also outlines the preliminary results of the pilot’s initial 6 months.
  • Perinatal social and emotional health for women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds (30 min):
    presents the results of a qualitative study with Ethiopian, Sudanese and Iraqi communities in Perth.

    Developed by COPMI (Children of Parents with Mental Illness)

    The resource was developed for mental health workers and other allied workers who support parents who experience mental illness and their families. Six modules; recommended length 1 hour per module.

    Covers many topics, including antenatal depression, antenatal anxiety, baby blues, postnatal depression, puerperal psychosis, post-traumatic stress disorder, risk/protective factors, and working with Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander women.
    Module 1- Introduction. Recommended length 1-2 hours.

  • "Beyond babyblues: Detecting and managing perinatal mental health disorders in primary care" online training

    Developed by Beyondblue

    Aimed at general practitioners. Six modules; recommended length 1 hour per module. 

    Module 1- overview of perinatal mental health and the need to screen
    Module 2- depression screening using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale
    Module 3- Postnatal Depression (PND): further assessment and management
    Module 4- PND: pathways to care- collaborative practice
    Module 5- PND: GP mental health treatment plans
    Module 6- Management of perinatal depression
