WAPMHU Training

The WA Perinatal Mental Health Unit (WAPMHU) provides training courses and presentations for health professionals and community groups.

Training courses:

Presentations:

  • About WAPMHU (15 – 20 min):
    a brief overview of the unit and its activities. Covers the roles and responsibilities of staff, service expansion projects and state/federal initiatives.
  • Overview of perinatal mental health (15 min):
    discusses the signs and symptoms of the baby blues, postnatal psychosis and postnatal depression.
  • Perinatal anxiety disorders (1 hour):
    discusses the presentation of anxiety disorders in the perinatal period.
  • Overview of perinatal mental health resources (45 min):
    describes the resources available to consumers and health professionals. Includes 30 min DVD presentation (‘Boodjarri Business’, consumer or health professional version).
  • Carnarvon Aboriginal perinatal mental health project (30 min):
    Presents the results of a baseline evaluation conducted in Carnarvon with local health professionals and members of the Aboriginal community. Also discusses the implementation of the project.
  • Practical support project (20 min):
    describes the pilot project, in which the Red Cross provides mothers with practical support in their homes. Also outlines the preliminary results of the pilot’s initial 6 months.
  • Perinatal social and emotional health for women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds (30 min):
    presents the results of a qualitative study with Ethiopian, Sudanese and Iraqi communities in Perth.

WAPMHU can also tailor presentations to the needs of your audience.
