The Great Southern is approximately 40,500 square kilometres in area, bounded by Woodanilling in the north, Bremer Bay in the east, Denmark in the west and Albany in the south.

The area has a population of around 55,000, of which 3% are indigenous Australians. The majority of people live in the main towns of Albany, Denmark, Katanning and Mount Barker. The population is increasing significantly on the southern coastal strip while declining slightly in most other areas. A high proportion of older people live in the major centres. The main industries in the region are agriculture, fishing, forestry, mining, tourism and viticulture.

Albany is the regional centre and home to around 57% of the Great Southern's total population. Albany itself is located 408km southeast of Perth.

In 2007, Improving Maternity Services: 'Working Together Across Western Australia a Policy framework' was to expand options for maternity care in WA, enabling more choice and greater continuity of care for a woman and her family.

The MANSmap questionnaire identified the models of maternity care operating at each unit. Standardised classification were used when describing maternity models of care as per the National Maternity Care Classification System (MaCCS). For detailed descriptions of each of the models of care see Models of Care and Definitions on SOSU Homepage.
