Haematology Transfusion Medicine Protocols
PathWest is the laboratory service provider for King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH). The hospital laboratory specialise in fetal, neonatal, obstetric and gynaecological laboratory medicine.
The laboratories are accredited by the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) Australia.The Haematologists within the Laboratory Services are Dr A Barr and Dr N Staples.
The Transfusion Services has a Senior Transfusion Scientist in charge of operations and a Transfusion Coordinator undertakes Transfusion education updates, audit and adverse incident investigation.
KEMH has a Hospital Transfusion Committee (HTC). The main objective of the HTC is to promote the highest standard of transfusion practice and to promote discussion and dialogue between all staff involved in the transfusion process. The HTC reports to the medical advisory committee.
The HTC is charged with the review of:
- Clinical Transfusion Practice (based on National Guidelines e.g. NHMRC/ASBT Guidelines)
- Performance of the hospital transfusion service.
- Performance of the Australian Red Cross Blood Service as provider
- Legal implications of transfusion practice.
