The Neonatalogy Clinical Care Unit (NCCU) is made up of two neonatal units, one at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH) and the other at Princess Margaret Hospital for Children (PMH).
Each nursery is designed to care for premature and sick infants and provides the facilities and expertise for tertiary level neonatal care in Western Australia . There are approximately 2,200 neonates admitted to the unit each year.
Special Care Nursery at KEMH is an 80 cot neonatal unit for predominantly inborn preterm or sick babies. Outborn babies and those requiring surgery are admitted to the 25 cot neonatal unit at PMH.
NCCU has a team of highly skilled specialist medical and nursing staff who provide care for neonates and their families.
The Newborn Emergency Transport Service (NETS WA) is a mobile intensive care unit responsible for the retrieval and safe transportation of around 850 preterm or sick newborns and young infants from throughout Western Australia to Perth.
Such babies require intensive care or complex investigations in a tertiary hospital and such facilities are lacking in outer metropolitan, regional and remote centers. NETS also performs around 450 back-transfers, and offers telephone advice to referring doctors, nurses and midwives state-wide.
NETS provides 2 teams of specialist neonatal-trained doctors and nurses 24 hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week. It works in conjunction with St John Ambulance and the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
