Sue Peter was so impressed with her colleague Dr Fenella Gill’s dedication to research in child and adolescent nursing that she nominated her for the Excellence in Research Award at the 2016 WA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards – and she won.

As the Director of Nursing at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH), Ms Peter had the experience to know when a colleague truly ‘went the extra mile’ and produced work that positively impacted on patient care and the family experience.
“As a nursing leader in WA, I see this as a key responsibility: to be proactive in nominating and encouraging others to nominate for these Awards,” she said.
“It cannot be underestimated what a great honour it is to be nominated as a nurse.
“Fenella was very worthy of this nomination. Her work shaped how nurses deliver care, engage with families and the patient care experience, and it is highly regarded and respected by her peers.
“Her research at PMH into parent initiated calling for help for the deteriorating child has been widely published, and gained media attention and international invitations to speak at interdisciplinary conferences.
“She also fosters the advancement of her colleagues by supporting the development of other nurse researchers.
“I felt a huge sense of pride and gratitude for having the opportunity to acknowledge and recognise the significant achievements and leadership of a nursing colleague through this nomination.”
The Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards celebrate the achievements of nurses and midwives that provide excellent care and service and who make a significant difference in the current and future delivery of health care in WA.
Nurses or midwives from any sector of the health system can be nominated in 11 General Categories (external site) – one of which is Excellence in Research – while the public can nominate staff for the Consumer Appreciation Award (external site).
Finalists will be announced at a cocktail party on 9 March 2018, and winners revealed at a gala dinner on Saturday, 12 May 2018.
