Mental Health
Royal Perth Hospital (RPH) provides a wide range of specialist mental health inpatient and outpatient services to our consumers living in the inner city and eastern suburbs.
Royal Perth Hospital’s Dabakarn Mental Health Unit (MHU) opened on 14 June 2022. The MHU further aligns to our hospital’s mental health services with the needs of our community. It will complement our Mental Health Emergency Centre and Ward 2K, by providing a specialised psychiatric inpatient care environment for individuals with acute and complex mental illness needs.
The MHU has 12 single consumer rooms, each with their own ensuite, and with additional facilities including dedicated exercise and social areas, staff facilities, and activity spaces.
The facility was designed in consultation with clinical and non-clinical staff, and those with lived experience of mental health. Safety, a therapeutic environment, and recognition of the first nation custodians of the land are all hallmarks throughout the design. Dabakarn means ‘slowly slowly’, which is reflective of the mental health consumer’s recovery, which is central to the unit’s service approach.
It will also have particularly close links with mental health services at Bentley Hospital, to support consumers within the entire Royal Perth Bentley Group catchment area.
The City East Community Mental Health Service provides access to adult outpatient mental health services, including treatment, urgent assessment and intervention.
The City East Community Mental Health Service operates from 8:30am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday (except on public holidays). There are a number of services offered at City East Community Mental Health Service:
Assessment and Treatment Team
The Assessment and Treatment team (ATT) is the first point of contact for all referrals to adult community mental health services within the City East catchment area.
The multi-disciplinary team includes psychiatrists, nurses and allied health staff who help to provide triage, assessment and short-term care and treatment options for consumers up to a maximum of 10 weeks.
Clinical Treatment Team
The Clinical Treatment Team (CTT) receives all referrals via the ATT and offers multi-disciplinary mental health assessment and care coordination for consumers who require care and specialist care and treatment options for more than 10 weeks.
City Older Adult Mental Health Service
The City Older Adult Mental Health Service provides a comprehensive recovery-focused mental health service to Older Adult consumers within the inner city and eastern metropolitan region of Perth.
The service provides an assessment and/or case management service to consumers aged 65 or over (45 for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers) who have mental health issues, or who are experiencing severe behavioural and psychological problems associated with dementia.
The team consists of psychiatrists, community nurses, social workers, occupational therapists and psychologists.
Mobile Clinical Outreach Team
The Mobile Clinical Outreach Team (MCOT) provides services through clinical assessment, community triage, treatment for rough sleepers. The team is street present and works closely with specialist homeless service, mainstream mental health services, drug and alcohol services and primary care services to deliver a coordinated model of care.
After hours Support
For after-hours support the Mental Health Emergency Response Line (MHERL) is available 24 hours a day to metro callers on 1300 555 788 (local call) and Peel callers on 1800 676 822 (free call).

The RAPID Service is a 24 hour, 7 day a week service that provides psychiatric assessment within the RPH Emergency Department, as well as alcohol and other drug assessment.
The service is staffed with specialist psychiatric medical staff, Psychiatric Liaison Nurses and Alcohol and Drug Clinicians.
Royal Perth Hospital Ward 2K is a 20 bed general adult open unit that provides care for voluntary acute patients between the ages of 18 to 65 that require specialist mental health care.
Referrals to RPH inpatient mental health services are received from the RPH Emergency Department, the Consultation Liaison team (a specialist team that review mental health patients in the general hospital), other Hospitals and community teams.
The MHEC is a discrete, purpose built, short stay unit located adjacent to the RPH Emergency Department (ED). The new MHEC has eight treatment spaces – six beds and two chairs.
Patients presenting to the ED with acute mental health issues will be assessed in the ED and streamed through to the MHEC according to set inclusion and exclusion criteria.
The MHEC team provide inpatient care in the MHEC and out-reach support to the ED, meaning there is coordinated care upon entry to RPH for consumers with mental health care needs.
