Pelvic Mesh Complications Clinic

WNHS at KEMH provides a comprehensive multidisciplinary team-based approach for management of gynaecological pelvic mesh complications for women from across WA who are referred to the Pelvic Mesh Complication Clinic.

Women with gynaecological mesh complications are offered care and management by the different members of the team depending on their needs. The pelvic mesh complications clinic is staffed by specialist staff including urogynaecologists, urologists, pain specialists, ultrasound specialists, clinical psychologists, women’s health and continence physiotherapists, urogynaecology specialist nurse, social workers and occupational therapists.

The clinic provides an holistic approach to management of mesh complications which may affect many aspects of a woman’s health and overall wellbeing.

 

Clinical inclusion

Complications from previous pelvic mesh surgery:

  • Surgery, including mesh removal, is available. Surgery is offered on an individual basis as part of the multidisciplinary treatment plan.
  • Removal of mesh is possible in some cases however it may not improve symptoms, including pain.
  • The patient’s concerns and expectations regarding pelvic mesh and management options will be considered as part of the treatment plan.
  • Non-surgical management therapies are the first line therapies offered.

 

Clinical exclusion

Complications arising from non-gynaecological mesh procedures – refer to local surgical service.

 

Frequency of clinic

Appointments on different days throughout the week to facilitate access.

 

Referral to include

Pre-requisite information for referrals:

  • Detailed history, including current medications, allergies and past surgical history.
  • Letters outlining previous surgery involving pelvic mesh.
  • Details of any mobility issues.
  • Copies of investigations performed, such as transvaginal pelvic ultrasound.

Referral process

All referrals from GPs to this clinic are sent to the Central Referral Service WA (CRS) (external site). Ensure you provide the relevant information in the referral to enable appropriate triage, including required investigation results and letters from treating medical practitioners if relevant and request pelvic mesh complications clinic at WNHS.

Referrals using GP software that include all the relevant history and information are also welcome using CRS referral form templates (external site).
