Diabetes Service at WNHS

Role of service

The Diabetes Service at WNHS at KEMH provides multidisciplinary team care for women with diabetes and gestational diabetes. It provides preconception and antenatal care for women with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes from across Western Australia.

The Diabetes Service also provides antenatal care and management for women with Gestational Diabetes in the current pregnancy who reside in the WNHS at KEMH catchment area, or who require tertiary level antenatal care.

 

Clinical inclusion

  • Pre conception care and counselling – diagnosis of type 1 or Type 2 Diabetes.
  • Antenatal Care and management – Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.
  • Gestational Diabetes (refer to general antenatal clinic in the first instance) if requiring tertiary level antenatal care.

 

Clinical exclusion

Gestational diabetes and residing outside of WNHS at KEMH catchment zone – please refer to local maternity services provider in first instance.

 

Frequency of clinic

Twice weekly.

 

Referral to include

  • Complete medical and obstetric history.
  • Current diabetes management and medications.
  • Copy of OGTT and HbA1C if done.
  • Copy of correspondence relating to diabetes care.
  • Copy of antenatal care documentation.

 

Urgent referral

Ring WNHS at KEMH Switchboard (08) 6458 2222 and ask for Obstetric Registrar on call

If condition requires immediate action, discuss with:

  • On call Medical Registrar – Tel: (08) 6458 2222 OR
  • Diabetes Nurse Practitioner – Tel: (08) 6458 2163

Complete the KEMH Antenatal Referral Form (PDF) and requested investigations.

Request Diabetes Service on the antenatal form.
