MRI Service

King Edward Memorial Hospital’s (KEMH) MRI scanner department is available by referral for patients of KEMH.

For outpatients, once a request is received, KEMH MRI will post the appointment details and any preparation required to you. An SMS reminder will also be sent. Please call to cancel or rebooking appointments.

For inpatients, once a referral is received, an appointment will be made and the ward will be contacted to inform them of the appointment time. Any preparation required will be passed on at this time. The MRI Safety Checklist for Patients should be completed prior to you coming down for your MRI scan. Midwifery or nursing staff must escort and accompany you for MRI scans at all times.

The MRI uses an extremely strong magnetic field for imaging. Metal objects can be pulled into the magnet and can be very dangerous. Safety and patient care are paramount. All patients will be investigated for metallic implants and foreign bodies prior to their scan. We request patience from patients, parents and staff where delays may occur while safety aspects are checked. Any concerns or queries can be discussed with the MRI radiographer prior to the scan.
