WNHS Medical Imaging Service

WNHS offers medical imaging, including Radiology and MRI, as well as ultrasound diagnostic imaging for patients. The specific requirements for referral are detailed below. Information about specialised ultrasound diagnostic imaging is provided separately.

 

Radiology and MRI at WNHS

The following services are available at WNHS Medical Imaging at KEMH

Xray

  • Available to women and men across WA
  • Plain Radiography only

Bone Density

  • Available to women and men across WA

Fluoroscopy

  • Available to women across WA
  • Hysterosalpingograms (HSG’s)
  • Cystograms

MRI

  • Available to WNHS catchment only
  • Fetal Imaging – patient must be referred to MFAU first for assessment

 

Clinical inclusion

Xray

  • All plain Radiography
  • Scoliograms, Maquette views, OPG’s and complex specialised views not available

Bone Density

  • KEMH specialises in bone density for pre and post-menopausal women

Fluoroscopy

  • Adult women only
  • Hysterosalpingograms (HSG’s)
  • Cystograms

MRI

  • All MRI available to WNHS catchment only. No direct GP referral accepted.
  • Fetal Imaging – patient must be referred to MFAU first for assessment.
  • Women adult MRI imaging - Gynaecology (pelvis), abdomen, liver, head and spine imaging available only for current WNHS patients.
  • Adult male inclusions are referral from Genetics Services only.
  • Neonatal term scans and other neonatal referrals accepted for inpatients only.

 

Clinical exclusion

Xray

  • Scoliograms, Maquette views and OPG’s not available

Fluoroscopy

  • No paediatric fluoroscopy (unless inpatient) or male imaging.

MRI

  • All MRI available to WNHS catchment only (no direct GP referral accepted).
  • All requests to be signed by a consultant and urgent request to be approved by Radiologist.
  • Musculoskeletal or breast imaging not available.
  • No male patients.

 

Frequency of clinic

(All closed weekends and public holidays)

Xray

Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5pm, no bookings required.

Bone Density

Tuesday to Friday, bookings essential.

Fluoroscopy

Hysterosalpingograms (HSG’s) service available Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings, bookings essential.

Cystogram service available Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings and Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons, bookings essential.

MRI

Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, bookings essential.

 

Referral to include

All Xray, Bone Density, Fluoroscopy and MRI referrals must include:

  • Patient details – surname and forename, date of birth and contact details.
  • Referring Doctor’s name, provider number, signature and contact details.
  • Imaging type requested, body part and detailed indication for scan and relevant clinical history.
  • MRI referral must be signed by a consultant.

 

Urgent referral

For all urgent referrals contact Medical Imaging Reception on (08) 6458 2830.

 

Referral process

Xray referrals can accompany the patient on arrival. There is no requirement to book ahead of time. However, to avoid a wait time the patient may like to phone ahead to discuss on (08) 6458 2830.

All other referrals can be sent directly to KEMH.

Referrals are received by administrative staff. Referrals which appear routine will be scheduled for the next available appointment and an appointment letter sent out to the patient. Referrals which appear complicated and / or urgent are triaged by Radiographers or medical staff and the patient will be contacted to book in an appointment.
