WNHS Ultrasound Services and Diagnostic Imaging

Overview

Diagnostic Imaging at WNHS provides the following specialised ultrasound services:

Tertiary Obstetric Ultrasound

• Dating and viability
• Combined first trimester screening (or Early anatomy following NIPT)
• 18 to 22 week morphology
• Third trimester growth, fluid, well-being, placental assessment

Tertiary Gynaecologic Ultrasound

• Transabdominal and transvaginal pelvic ultrasound
• Deep infiltrating endometriosis assessment
• Pelvic floor assessment
• Pelvic mesh assessment (following request from Urogynaecology Dept)
• Saline-infusion sonography
• Hystero-Contrast Sonography (HyCoSy) for tubal patency
• Aspiration of pelvic cysts and abscesses

Clinical inclusion

Routine obstetric ultrasound (please note comment in Referral Process below regarding capacity).

Obstetric ultrasound for patients across WA who warrant tertiary review due to high-risk pregnancy.

Routine gynaecology ultrasound (please note comment in Referral Process below regarding capacity).

Gynaecology ultrasound for patients across WA who warrant tertiary review due to complexity of condition.

Clinical exclusion

Very high-risk pregnancies and fetal anomalies should be referred directly to the Maternal Fetal Medicine Service at WNHS or FSH.

Early Pregnancy with complications (eg. bleeding, pain) should be referred directly to EPAS.

Paediatric gynaecology ultrasound – for cases not considered appropriate for PCH, please contact the Sonologist in session to discuss.

Non-obstetric or gynaecological services, including breast imaging.

Frequency of clinic

7:45am to 5pm, Monday to Friday

Closed on public holidays and weekends.

Referral to include

Medicare requirements:

• Date, Patient details, Referring Doctor’s name, provider number, signature and contact details.
• Medicare indication for scan.

Obstetric referrals should include the established EDD, or LMP if dates not yet confirmed, along with relevant clinical history.

Gynaecology referrals should include the clinical question to be answered and relevant clinical history. For referrals related to review of previous scan findings, please include the location of prior scans or attach copies of scan reports.

Urgent referral

Contact O&G sonologist in session within Medical Imaging on (08) 6458 2830. Alternatively contact the Co-ordinating Sonographer on 0420 302 596.

Referral process

Referrals are received by administrative staff. Referrals which appear routine will be scheduled for the next available appointment (gynaecology) or appropriate time-frame (obstetric – if available). Referrals which appear complicated are triaged by sonographers or medical staff.

Obstetrics

Please be aware that due to the workload of WNHS outpatient clinics, it may not be possible to accommodate private or GP direct obstetric referrals. Referrals will be considered based on referral indication, patient location and availability of other suitable providers. The patient may be contacted to advise them to have the scan performed elsewhere, or to contact their referring doctor for an alternative solution. Please consider this when referring to KEMH Medical Imaging. If urgent referral from GP, please contact the O&G Sonologist in Session or Co-ordinating Sonographer to discuss.

Gynaecology

The waitlist for routine gynaecology ultrasound is typically 2 to 3 months. Please consider this when referring to KEMH Medical Imaging.
