Aboriginal cadetships getting results 04 May 2022 While studying Paramedicine, Rhiannon Potiphar joined the Aboriginal Cadetship Program, a key NMHS workforce initiative aimed at attracting Aboriginal students into the Department of Health. Rhiannon assisted at KEMH one day a week to begin with, working up to full time when she graduated from university. Rhiannon’s role was to liaise with Aboriginal families who had given birth to pre-term babies in the neonatal intensive care unit and to encourage them to come back for ongoing developmental assessments. “I built a strong network with the parents, the regional child health nurses and local Aboriginal medical services in an effort to connect with families who lived remotely,” said Rhiannon. “This project really allowed me to further my understanding of the complexities and barriers that our mob face when trying to receive health care.” Rhiannon’s time...

Celebrating our dedicated staff! 03 May 2022 Congratulations to Hilary Goldsmith WNHS March Employee of the Month Resident Medical Officer Hilary Goldsmith has been recognised as the Women and Newborn Health Service’s Employee of the Month for her commitment to supporting her colleagues and providing excellent patient centred care to women and their families, and particularly those from a culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) background. Hilary demonstrates great attention to detail in her clinical work and was nominated by her colleague for being a team player who is always willing to assist others, picking up extra shifts to assist her colleagues through the COVID-19 pandemic. Celebrating our dedicated staff! 03 May 2022 Congratulations to Kelly Abey WNHS February Employee of the Month Enabling clinical staff to provide excellent patient care to women and their families throughout the COVID-19 response, Clinical Product Advisor Kelly Abey has been recognised as the Women and Newborn Health Service (WNHS) Employee of the Month. Kelly was nominated by her colleague for her positive and enthusiastic attitude toward achieving optimum outcomes for patients and staff. Throughout the pandemic, Kelly has worked with the team to assist with equipment requirements, integrating new processes, systems and policies, while always finding ways to improve and innovate. Sexual Assault Awareness Month 08 April 2022 Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) (external site) is an International Campaign to draw attention to the impact of sexual assault. The Sexual Assault Resource Centre (SARC), part of WNHS, is supporting the 2022 campaign theme ‘Building Safe Online Spaces Together’ by creating community awareness of their service and encouraging people to join in the efforts towards sexual assault prevention. Sexual assault is ANY unwanted sexual act which is threatening, violent, forced or coercive and to which a person has not given consent or was not able to give consent. SARC services are is partially state-wide. Services offered to people in the Perth Metropolitan area include emergency services for recent sexual assaults (within 2 weeks) and counselling services for historical sexual trauma for any gender 13 years and older. A calming presence for expectant parents, Labour and Birth Suite (LBS) and Maternal Fetal Assessment Unit (MFAU) Ward Clerk Rachel Betts (Tachos) has been recognised as the Women and Newborn Health Service’s (WNHS) Employee of the Month. Rachel was nominated by her colleague for the friendly and patient service she provides to women and their families as they present either to the MFAU with often worrying, unexpected events in pregnancy, or as they arrive to the LBS anticipating the birth of their baby. Her nominator also described Rachel as an asset to staff on the unit, providing invaluable assistance with her helpful attitude and attention to detail.
